CHAIRMAN’S BLOG OCTOBER 2012

Congratulations

Congratulations to Lois Salisbury and Hugh Stanton, the first and second prize winners respectively in our 2012 photo competition. Lois wins a day with local wildlife photographer Mark Sissons at one of his excellent Birds of Prey photo workshops while Hugh receives a very nice Ricoh CX6 camera. This year’s competition attracted over 70 entries and the two prize-winning pictures were among the 13 chosen by the judges for inclusion in the FOTTP calendar 2013. You can see all the 2012 entries at http://flic.kr/s/aHsjCuqWtW or just the 13 selected images at http://flic.kr/s/aHsjCu7Sj3. And the 2013 calendar will be available, in two sizes, from the new visitor centre in the park by the end of the month.

The Town Park through the year

Although this year’s photo competition is now closed, we are of course very happy to continue to receive pictures of the park. The park has something to offer the photographer at every season of the year and we are keen to see that variety represented on our web site and on our displays in the visitor centre. So, at the suggestion of one of our contributors, we have now set up a new public Town Park Flickr group http://www.flickr.com/groups/telfordtownpark Feel free to upload any photos taken within the park at any time. There are no prizes for this one but the best of the images received will be displayed in the visitor centre and you can of course also submit them to next year’s photo competition in due course

 Wonderland Halloween events

The Halloween half term is with us and Wonderland has a great programme of events for children of all ages. Those for the tiny tots take place during the day and those for older children in the evening. Full details are shown on the Wonderland web site http://wonderlandtelford.net .

And once the Halloween is over the next stop is Christmas………….

 Santa Fun Run – 10.30 AM 9th December 2012

Our 6th annual Santa Fun Run will be held on Sunday 9th December. As in past years the run will start from the QE ii arena and funds raised will be split between Guide Dogs UK and the RNIB.  The Mayor, Councillor Kevin Guy has agreed to attend and once again we will have the 200% Sound roadshow, kindly provided by RMP Guarding, to get the runners warmed up before the event. For those who have not attended in past years, the run is a great event and at something around 2 kilometres the course is ideal for families with children and for those whose fitness falls something short of Olympic standards. Registrations costs £3 per person and a copy of the registration form can be downloaded from the web site here

Christmas Lantern Parade – 6PM 21st December

The Lantern Parade is a magical lantern-lit walk through Telford Town Park on the longest night of the year with festive entertainment and a spectacular fireworks to music display. Admission is free

The Parade will start from the Bandstand in the Town Park at 6pm and the procession will then makes its way past the play areas, around Withy Pool and arrive back at the Visitor Centre to view the fireworks. Children must be accompanied by an adult at all times and event visitors are advised to wear suitable outdoor clothing and footwear for the prevailing weather conditions

If you would like to make a lantern for the Parade, free lantern making workshops will be taking place during December at locations around the borough. For full event and workshop details visit the website http://www.telford.gov.uk/lanternparade

 Looking beyond Christmas

The New year will bring a number of significant improvements to the Park. Footpaths, signage and gateways will all be substantially enhanced under the latest phase of the Lottery-funded parks for people project which is now under way.

We can also expect to see some major changes around the play area and the Visitor Centre shortly. Landscaping around the centre is now in progress and work is about to start on the new water play area and the rope course. Both should be up and running for next spring and there are also plans for a crazy golf course on the same timescale.

Details of all these improvements can be seen in the Visitor Centre

 FOTTP meetings

Our meetings are held in the Visitor Centre in the Town Park at 6PM on the 2nd Wednesday of each month – so the next is on Wednesday 14th November. Everyone is welcome – you don’t need to sign up to membership.

In the meantime, you can keep up with news through the web site – https://friendsoftelfordtownpark.org, through Twitter https://twitter.com/fottp or through Facebook http://www.facebook.com/FOTTP
