New Chair for the Friends

At The Friends’ AGM on Wednesday 9 April, John Trubshaw was elected as the new Chair for the Friends of Telford Town Park. John has been an active member of the Friends for several years and takes over from Chris Pettman, the longest serving chairman in the  eleven year history of the group. Chris will remain an active volunteer.

Upon his appointment John said: “I am honoured to take on the role of Chair of the Friends of Telford Town Park and to continue the great work done by previous incumbents. My vision for the future is to see more children and young people involved in conservation both within the Park and across all of Telford’s Green Spaces and I am delighted to report that to this end discussions are already underway to hopefully launch two new projects later this year. Please keep a look out for further information about these two projects during the coming months.

“Firstly ‘The Green Brigade’ is a project which aims to encourage and support young people aged from 16 to 24 years to gain skills for both employment and personal development by participating in a range of outdoor activities.  It is being supported and developed by the wider Telford Green Spaces Partnership (TGSP), a forum of 19 voluntary groups each of whom help maintain and protect a public green space in the Borough of Telford and Wrekin and a number of other local organisations. Secondly, The Friends of Telford Town Park are in the process of preparing to launch a ‘Junior Rangers’ section to train the next generation of young conservation volunteers.

“For these aims to be achieved, we will of course need more volunteers and financing and I look forward to working with the other officers of the Executive Committee and wider Friends volunteers to raise our profile both publicly and commercially. Together, I am sure that we can encourage the good folk of Telford and beyond to venture past the wonderful play areas and into the Park at large.  How great would it be to see families enjoying a picnic in any one of the open spaces within the park and appreciating the wonders of nature around them that it is our purpose to conserve and protect”.
