Recently the Friends have been involved with Paul Belford of Nexus Heritage in what they believe to be the first survey ever undertaken of a slag crushing plant.
These sites were constructed to process the waste slag material from the local iron furnaces and turn it into road making material, subsequently with the addition of tar to make a hard smooth surface. The site the Friends worked on, is along the extreme eastern footpath, going south from the Stirchley Chimney and can now be clearly seen from the path. It is hoped that more money will be available in the future to enhance the site along with interpretation boards.
This programme will be ongoing and if you would like to assist the Friends in any way, then please use our ‘contact’ page and get in touch.
